“Competing for prizes is part of the training and the sooner you start the better”.

Sveva D’Antonio is convinced of this, collector dedicated with her husband Francesco Taurisano to the family collection consisting of over 400 works, and expert on the art market with years spent in the management of the Laveronica Art Gallery in Modica, left in April 2020 to undertake new international challenges.

Among these, that of promoting and supporting emerging art in all its facets, as well as being part of the MTArt Agency Art Selection Committee, a commission of excellence formed by leading personalities from the art world with the aim of selecting the best talents for the MTArt Agency.

In this interview Sveva reveals the best tips to proceed with your candidacy for the Art Rights Prize.

    Sveva D’Antonio

Graduated in Art History from Suor Orsola Benincasa in Naples in 2013 with a thesis on how certain types of films can be transformed into works of art and enter museum spaces.

Sveva D’Antonio after various internships in contemporary art galleries in Naples and Brussels, started working at the Laveronica gallery in Modica initially as an assistant and then became a partner in 2016. The gallery focuses its research on the human condition through socially and politically engaged art.

In April 2020 Sveva left the gallery to look for new challenges and opportunities for the development of her career.

She recently joined the MTArt Agency Art Selection Committee.

She has always dedicated herself to the family collection, a passion for art that she shares with her husband Francesco since their first meeting. The Taurisano collection now has almost more than 400 works with a focus on emerging artists and the active support of their practices.

1.For you, what importance does an Art Prize have in an artist’s career?

The career of an artist is made up of various factors and can diversify according to the background.

The career of an artist already begins with training and continues in the years to come with the various residences and further specializations.

Competing for prizes is part of the training and the sooner you start the better. In fact, the award can be an excellent opportunity to compare yourself with other artists of the same generation who use the same medium and with industry experts.

The advice and criticisms of the experts serve to better understand the dynamics of the system that certainly cannot be learned in the academies.

So I would say that the award has a formative importance for the artist especially at the beginning of his career and I hope that very young artists will participate and submit their works to us.

2.What would you recommend to an artist who wants to participate in an Art Prize?

I would definitely recommend being as faithful to his practice as possible, not fixing the work for the prize but convincing us that his narrative is solid and deserving.

Not to be afraid to take risks, to be experimental, uncomfortable, dreamy and romantic.

3.What factors do you take into consideration when judging a nomination for an Art Award?

The originality of the work and the ability to tell a story.

The strength of the formalization of an idea, the aesthetic form must always go hand in hand with the poetics of the work.
